Overview

Tang (Box Hill) stands as a humble yet remarkable beacon for authentic Chinese flavors nestled at 2 Elland Ave, Box Hill. This restaurant skillfully balances tradition with accessibility, offering a curated menu that highlights staple Chinese noodle dishes and dim sum from Jiangnan and beyond. Its unassuming location beneath an apartment complex belies the richness of its culinary offerings.

The restaurant’s signature Kaiyang Noodles exemplify the care put into each bowl—handmade, with a spring onion oil that coats silky noodles, delivering a perfect harmony of texture and fragrance. Patrons praise the generous portions, making it ideal for those seeking a satisfying meal without fuss. Equally noteworthy are the Pan Fried Scallion Pancakes, crisp on the outside and richly savory, and the Tang Specialty Beef Soup Mee, which features tender red braised beef brisket alongside scallion oil-infused beef slices, showcasing deep, layered flavors that embody comforting home-style cooking.

For fans of authentic wontons, the Jiangnan Style Steamed Wonton with Soup offers a glimpse of Shanghai’s culinary heritage, paired with carefully prepared broths that elevate the delicate dumplings. The Fried Seaweed Rice Cake with its accompanying dipping sauce provides a nice textural contrast and subtle umami, rounding out a menu that balances diverse tastes and textures. The drink selection, including freshly made organic soy milk and jasmine tea, complements the food without overpowering it.

The ambiance of Tang is understated—more focused on quiet efficiency than elaborate decor—which suits visitors looking for a quick, hearty, and authentic dining experience in the bustling heart of Box Hill. Its proximity to Box Hill Central makes it accessible to both locals and visitors craving genuine Chinese fare. The modest, unfussy space calls to food lovers who prioritize flavor and quality over extravagance.

The customer experience at Tang is consistently positive, with diners commending the texture and flavor of noodles and the authenticity of the wontons. While some note that service can be more passionate, the fair prices, speedy preparation, and quiet morning hours provide a welcoming environment for casual meals. The menu’s manageable size helps guests make thoughtful choices without overwhelm.

Overall, Tang (Box Hill) is a quiet jewel for anyone seeking straightforward, hearty Chinese dishes that honor traditional recipes. It is a destination for those valuing genuine taste, portion generosity, and an unpretentious setting that caters to a broad audience—from office workers on a lunch break to families exploring Box Hill’s culinary offerings. Delicious dry spring onion oil noodle. Great texture noodle only $6. Love the wonton which is authentic just like those we had in Shanghai. Pan fried dumplings were delicious too just probably a bit more pricey for only just 5 pieces for $9.5 but worth the try.

The KaiYang Noddle is absolutely delicious! The portion is wonderful! Steamed Wonton is quite odd tbh. But the price is more than reasonable so I would recommend this place for a quick lunch.

We sometimes come here when we would like to have a simple meal. Very worthy as compared with the price and the portion. That will be great if the server can be more passinate :) But it was still ok. Always come back for the beef noodles soup even it's a bit salty for me, but acceptatble. They used to be busier, but seems like the business for the entire Boxhill is decreasing. Will definitely come back to support sometimes!

Under an apartment complex, there is a hidden gem in Box Hill where they serve delicious noodle dishes that hit the spot. The generous servings and rich flavours made every taste enjoyable. They have a small menu that is easy to choose from, and the soup dumplings and pancakes are a must-try. I would come again to swing by for a cheap, tasty meal!

Cozy little shop serving up comforting, flavorful noodles at great value. I had the Kaiyang noodle with fried egg — simple, satisfying, and just $7 (extra noodles $3.90 made it big enough to share). Tried the sweet tofu pudding, which had a wonderfully clean and delicate taste. Personally, I would’ve loved a hint of ginger to round it out, but it was still very enjoyable on its own. Great spot for a quick, tasty, and affordable meal.
